چکیده

There are many products, including hard drives, which require trace amounts, on the order of several milligrams, of lubricants for proper operation. The following study investigated the evaporation rates of pump oil and several alkanes, which have a wide range of applications. Both static and dynamic temperature tests were conducted. The rate of evaporation of the test specimen was determined as the mass loss per unit time. Using the Arrhenius equation, the activation energy of the evaporation process, Ea, can be calculated as the slope of the best fit line for a plot of the ln(k) vs. 1/T (where k represents the evaporation rate). The alkanes were compared using the activation energy required for evaporation as model systems. Pump oil was also evaporated from two types of microchannels. Developed testing procedures help speed up new lubricant formulations qualification.

Evaporation Characteristics of Diesel and Biodiesel Fuel Droplets on Hot Surfaces

In CI engines, the evaporation rate of fuel on various hot surfaces, including the combustion chamber, has a significant effect on deposit formation and accumulation, the exhaust emissions of PM and NOx, and their efficiency. Therefore, the evaporation of liquid fuel droplets impinging on hot surfaces has become an important subject of interest to engine designers, manufacturers, and researcher...

Seasonal differences of the atmospheric particle size distribution in a metropolitan area in Japan.

We compared the effect of ambient temperature observed in two different seasons on the size distribution and particle number concentration (PNC) as a function of distance (up to ~250 m) from a major traffic road (25% of the vehicles are heavy-duty diesel vehicles). The modal particle diameter was found between 10 and 30 nm at the roadside in the winter. However, there was no peak for this size ...

Weathering of fuel oil spill on the east Mediterranean coast, Ashdod, Israel

Residual fuel oil spilled into the sea from the Eshkol power station on 8 February, 1998 contaminated about 9 km of the foreshore north of the Ashdod harbour. A study of the aliphatic, polycyclic alkane and polyaromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) composition of the spilled oil shows rapid weathering in the early stages followed by gradual slowdown after about three months. Weathering of isoprenoids and ...

Evaporation of an emulsion trapped in a yield stress fluid.

The present work deals with emulsions of volatile alkanes in an aqueous clay suspension, Laponite, which forms a yield stress fluid. For a large enough yield stress (i.e. Laponite concentration), the oil droplets are prevented from creaming and the emulsions are thus mechanically stabilized. We have studied the evaporation kinetics of the oil phase of those emulsions in contact with the atmosph...
